Those Crafty People in the Creative Corner
One of the five buildings used to house the Northern Michigan Relief Sale is devoted to “crafty” things. That’s not saying that quilts, baked goods, potted plants, jellies, and other such items don’t require a fair amount of craft to make. No, I’m just talking about those unique items, made from readily available materials such as wood, fiber, metal, and glass, that constitute “handicrafts.”
In the “Craft” building you will find two large areas displaying and selling craft items. Ten Thousand Villages focuses on international crafts. The “Creative Corner” is the area hosting items made by local artisans.
Just look at the variety of things in this Corner: wooden puzzles, wall hangings, Christmas ornaments, handwoven rugs, stained glass creations, toys, clocks, shelves, puzzles, lamps… do you get the idea?

There are things that will charm you because of the inspired way common materials were put together to make a serendipitous whole. There are things that will amaze you because of the fine details and workmanship. Since they are locally produced, you will not see these items in retail stores or in on-line websites.
An interesting bonus for visitors is that the person who made the item will possibly be working in the “Creative Corner” at some time during the sale. So, if you want to find out where the ideas came from, or what kind of wood was used, you will likely have a chance to find out straight from the maker.
If you are looking for inspiration for your own handicraft hobby, the Corner is a good place to start. If you are looking for the perfect gift for a special person, the Corner is a good place to find it. If you are looking for that one unique item to complete the decor of your cabin or full-time home, the Corner specializes in “Unique.”
Two unique handicrafts will be demonstrated in the “Creative Corner” area during the relief sale this year. Local artisans will set up and demonstrate wool spinning and basket weaving work. We hope to let you know more about that in another article.
Come prepared with your Christmas list and get a head start on gift shopping. Come prepared to be amazed at the craftiness and artistry. Come prepared to take some of these special items home with you.
