Upper Peninsula Pasty

A unique treat at the Northern Michigan Relief Sale is the Upper Peninsula Beef Pasty. It is rarely found below the bridge. With the help of some Upper Peninsula churches, we have the pasty. Our pasty is sought after by many. It is not unusual for it to sell out quickly. The number of pasties available has increased in the last few years in order to satisfy more taste buds.

What is a pasty you might ask. It is a simple but delicious meal. One pasty can fill you up. A short description would be a hand held meat and potato pie. Though you most likely won’t eat it with your hand. It is served on a plate. Gravy is also available. It could be the original hot pocket. Pasties were the lunch of copper miners in the UP. It was portable and could be taken into the mine with them. They heated them on their shovel, as the story goes. You can enjoy yours above ground, under the trees at the Oscoda County Fairgrounds.

Our pasties will be made at the school kitchen. Local volunteers meet and enjoy a time of preparation for the Northern Michigan Relief Sale. I hear that the rollers build muscles and stamina. Thank you for being willing to serve in that capacity. The filling is provided by an authentic Upper Peninsula crew. The result is terrific.
