Focus on Ukraine
Starting in February, news media was saturated with information about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The coverage was continuous for a couple of months. Gradually we heard less and less about what was happening. That does not mean that the situation is over and all is well in Ukraine. The truth is far from that. The destruction, displacement, and death continue. Ukraine will be feeling the effects of this war for years to come.
MCC is currently working in Ukraine. This is not a recent development. In 1922 MCC went into the region (then a part of Russia) to help feed the starving people as an aftermath of war and revolution. They also helped the farmers with tractors, seeds, and livestock. Again in the 1990’s, after the fall of the Soviet Union, MCC was there to help in the same sort of ways. Since February 2022 MCC has sent five containers of supplies to Ukraine. Things like Relief Kits, Infant Kits, Comforters, and Canned Meat were part of these shipments. MCC has connections and people in place to facilitate this aid.
The 2022 Northern Michigan Relief Sale is focusing on ways to help alleviate the suffering the people of Ukraine are experiencing. You will find several opportunities to help out. Blessing Bids will be supporting shipping costs for the containers of relief items, helping with food distribution, and assisting with food supplies to countries affected by the blockage of Ukrainian grain shipments.
You will see the Blue and Yellow colors of the Ukrainian flag. The Color Booth will add blue to the yellow already planned. Relief Sale shirts will be yellow with blue printing. Donation buckets for Ukrainian Relief will be in both places. As always, the office can take donations at any time for your convenience in giving.
